Omar Khadr’s Allies

The thick markers of human identity are officially being erased everywhere.

Whether it is in relation to human personhood (the idea of gender), the family (the terms mother and father) or citizenship (the idea of postnationalism), it is clear that Western governments not only tolerate breaches of formerly fixed identity markers, they work to bring the full force of the law to assist individuals that flout them.

The Canadian government’s $10.5 m payoff of Omar Khadr in July was only the most highly publicized instance of a common tendency to reward treasonous activity.

Here we have another illustration.  It is known that there are significant numbers of jihadi militants who have left Western nations to fight alongside ISIS.  Very often, they are engaged in terrorist activities against their own national forces, and complete the indignity by returning ‘home’ without facing charges of treason.

Impiety against the past is the great characteristic of our age, but the masochistic treatment of national identity is aided and abetted from on high.
