Quantum entanglement is the future of the internet whether we understand it or not
‘Pan and his team have taken something that happens, even though we aren’t sure why, and started trying to find applications for it.’
This little phrase perfectly encapsulates the trajectory of much of modern research. A discovery that promises an increase in human power is seized upon for how it might be used, or ‘capitalized’ upon, without any need felt to consider the moral implications, or whether it would be wise to proceed at all. Perhaps the damage might outweigh the benefits.
Untethered from the Christian presuppositions that guided early modern science, one wonders how long it will be before the technological power used to war against our natural environmental limitations will be perceived as the world’s war against us.
For instance, while hackers cannot steal something like quantum information if it never travels – since source and destination are one and the same – how can those with malicious intent be stopped? If the source can’t be determined, no one can be held responsible for what will remain a human world of real consequences.
