Is the Concern Artificial Intelligence – or Autonomy?
The notion that we live in a functional but amoral universe used to be perceived as liberating by agnostics. But of course, if that were possible, then Artificial Intelligence might very well be able to exceed human competence while dispensing with any moral qualms – just like those who have made it in their image.
And just like Victor Frankenstein, the thought of a supercompetent but amoral being who exceeds their power fills them with horror.
