Will the left survive the Millennials?

One of the more extraordinary things to observe is how important the concept of freedom is to both the political left and the political right.  For some time, discussions of freedom on both sides has been defined in negative terms, as a freedom from something.  It marks the identity politics of the left as well as the libertarian arguments (often, though not exclusively found on the political right).

What has regularly been ignored in such discussions in the positive sense of freedom, which relates to the question of what freedom is for.  That sense of freedom, which would have coloured all historical discussions of freedom, is explicitly teleological, and thus amenable to religious frameworks of thought.

Galatians 5:1 states that “for freedom Christ has set us free.”

People on all sides within the political fragmentation of our society are aware of the importance of freedom to the issues they most care about.

So what is true freedom?  This article doesn’t answer the question, but it is candid about the way in which politics is increasingly coercing others in the name of freedom.

It is clear that exclusive attention to what we want to be free from leads to tyrrany.

So what is the purpose of human freedom? It is time for some adult conversations.
