Ex-PM Stephen Harper pens memo slamming Trudeau government over NAFTA talks
Former Canadian Prime Minister Steven Harper has written a memo criticizing the Liberal government’s NAFTA negotiations that was obtained by the Canadian Press.
In this memo, Harper describes the utter fecklessness of the Canadian negotiators in relation to three areas: ‘For too quickly rejecting U.S. proposals, for insisting on negotiating alongside Mexico, and for promoting progressive priorities like labour, gender, Aboriginal and environmental issues.’
Given the significance of NAFTA for Canada as a whole, it is rather encouraging to hear some words that address the ideological folly of Canada’s own stance, and not just how unreasonable the Americans are.
Sadly, the Liberal government’s commitment to a postnationalist policy that regards promoting certain identity- and special-interest groups ahead of national interests probably mean that the Liberals are committed to letting the agreement fail.
Canada’s current government does not seem to govern for all Canadians, and its failure will soon prove rather costly for all.
