‘One of the great attractions of tribalism is that you don’t actually have to think very much. All you need to know on any given subject is which side you’re on.’

This article is one of the many that are now identifying the problem of encouraging tribalism in politics.  Tribalism, which denies that there is a common human good, has been characteristic of politics since the adoption of Romantic ideas of nationhood as a genetic inheritance, i.e. the primacy of belonging to a ‘Volk’ rather than the Christian notion of belonging to the human race.

The intensity of the tribalism, however, is the direct result of the identity group politics of the left and the dissolution of that sense of human identity (ironically) within the humanities themselves.
