It used to be that Mom and Dad were in the baby-making business.  Now it is big business for the state.

God’s first commandment to Adam and Eve, to ‘be fruitful and multiply’, has been under steady assault throughout the twentieth century through human efforts to control life.  There is no greater symbol of this than abortion, the destruction of a vulnerable human life that now transpires under the euphemism of ‘women’s health’.

The transcendence of finite human existence and furtherance of God’s mandate through procreation has found a competitor in mankind itself.  The application of the human sciences to human nature, turning God’s dominion into human domination of human nature, is the stuff of dystopian fiction.

In our time, the prophetic voice of fiction is coming to fruition.  There is no more horrible demonstration of the commodification of human being in our day than the practice of surrogacy under progressive governments, who will happily fund any practice that shows the dominion of human will over human existence.

It could be argued that the push for same-sex marriage came not so much by homosexual couples, but by a broader cultural desire to wrestle the gift of life from God’s control.  In any event, however benign the intent, technology has given the West a new and highly profitable means of slavery: the baby-making business.
