Academic freedom does include the problem that you have to listen to people you don’t like

Some months ago, University of Toronto Professor Jordan Peterson shocked the world by acting like an academic, and exercising his academic freedom.   The furore that ensued proved the case he made about the perilous state of the academy, and society at large:  academic freedom was ‘more honoured in the breech than in the observance’.

Whether the contemporary academic behemoth can tolerate his appeal to the university’s fundamental principles remains an open question.
