Jennifer Lahl: UN address on the Practice of Surrogacy
Jennifer Lahl, Founder and President of The Center for Bioethics and Culture addresses the UN 61st Commission on the Status of Women. The 61st commission was to address the theme of women’s ‘Economic Empowerment in the Changing World of Work’.
Is the renting of wombs economic empowerment? Lahl argues it fundamentally exploits women and their children.
France, Germany, and Sweden have forbidden the practice altogether. It is an exploitation of the female body and her reproductive organs.
It is not another form of work, but part of the global trade of the female body fuelling ‘the growth of reproductive tourism.’
