Bill 24 and the attack on parental rights in public education

The policies being imposed by public policy makers in the name of sexual education or moral education (anti-bullying legislation) have been using a sledgehammer to crack a chestnut for some time.  Bullying is a perennial problem in schooling, but it’s not one that the bully pulpit of legislation deals with particularly well.

And there is a growing criticism that the cumulative effect of all the legislation and policies is little other than brainwashing.

Not only that, it forces a moral responsibility upon minors while denying it to their morally responsible parents.  And it does so by a exclusionary policies whereby schools delegitimize parents in much the same way that they once were in the residential schools.  It is an existential assault on Christians, as Jonathon Van Maren notes.

And this isn’t only a violation of internationally recognized parental rights, it contradicts science, as this article in the Globe & Mail notes:

“Laws that place children under the authority of parents until the age of 18 are consistent with brain science.

Schools are not family organizations. They are responsible for academic learning, but not moral moulding, social activism or extracurricular parenting. Teachers have professional training in subject matter, curriculum delivery and classroom management. Unless they are specialized, they are not guidance counsellors nor are they trained in child development. Their role is not to parent. Their role is to impart information and develop skills.

Parents, on the other hand, are personally vested in the well-being of their children and their role is to raise their children to become responsible, moral adults.”
