Senators Stab Trump to Death in Central Park Performance of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar
No doubt some media outlets will find signs of political insurrection in this performance. And there clearly are restive elements in the artistic community who are gaining notoriety by venting their spleen against U.S. President Trump.
But in ancient comedy, the political class were regularly abused on stage like this (and treated far worse in fact). The arts were always connected with immoral conduct, and were often little better than instruments of propaganda.
It is only with the onset of Christianity that theatre and the arts were reformed and given a dignity, beauty and didactic function that Shakespeare understood, which has largely been abandoned in our day.
A reformation of the arts is necessary for any just society to function.
