Thirty years ago, in The Closing of the American Mind, Allan Bloom noted that American undergraduates were marked by the same lack of principle as they were in the days of the Weimar Republic.  They could find no cause to animate them save tolerance.

The transformation in the meaning of the word ‘tolerance’, however’, to the ‘liberating tolerance’ of Cultural Marxist Herbert Marcuse is bringing out similar comparisons to what followed the Weimar Republic.
