What is “brain hacking”? Tech insiders on why you should care
Silicon Valley is engineering your phone, apps and social media to get you hooked, says a former Google product manager
Silicon Valley is shaping people’s behaviour by the way in which they are constructing their products. It could even be said that they are programming people to be addicted.
The narrative that technology is neutral, and it’s the way that use it that determines whether it is good or evil is at best partly true. Technology not only conforms to our use, it habituates us to the way it operates. Furthermore, as moral beings made to worship our every act has a moral dimension.
The word idolatry seems appropriate to the effect.
The destructive effects of technology on human relationships and even mental health is one obvious casualty. The neutering of the human person from worldly agency is another, rendering people more amenable to social control.
It is unsurprising that Silicon Valley favours progressive politics and expansive governments, and vice versa. That too is not a neutral arrangement.
