Rex Murphy: Liberals need to stop using Trump as a shield for their own incompetence in losing an election

Rex Murphy is a terrific columnist.  Here he suggests that the steadfast attacks on Donald Trump are cynical ploys to disguise their own incompetence, and it simply has to stop.

There are two other readings of the situation though, which are even less flattering.

One is that the Democrats (and the political left in general) no longer consider appealing to reasons why they ought to receive the general populace’s electoral support.  They are so overrun by tribalistic identity politics that they disdain appeals to the common good as foolish right-wing rhetoric.  The other is that they aren’t acting.  Their belief that politics is solely about wielding power has meant that they cannot contain the rage that they do not have it, and Trump does.
