Rex Murphy: Governor General appoints herself umpire of questions of faith and science
Canada's first female astronaut confuses UFOs with religious belief
A ‘ceremonial totem’, the term that Rex Murphy uses to describe the Governor General’s office in Canadian political life, is ill-suited to condescending remarks, particularly when the person concerned cannot distinguish between a totem pole and a faith such as Christianity that undergirds the scientific age.
Murphy calls Payette’s speech a ‘sophomoric indulgence.’ It’s insulting to my sophomores to describe it so. It was a space walk. Julie Payette became a hero to many by serving as an astronaut. She needs to learn her new role quickly.

Yeah, now we have a Governor General who is making herself the arbitrator of what is science and what is faith. Wonder where she stands on faith? Faith in what? We’re here cause we’re here, as evolutionary science reasons. Sounds more like scientism than science. She should stick to what she knows; namely, experimental or operational science which, unlike historical or origins science, can be observed, tested and repeated. Better still, if she wants to meddle in science and religion, then let her give up being Governor General and go back to being an astronaut. I’m sure mainstream scientific community would welcome her back.
