Another hedge of protection around personal sanctity has been removed in the U.K., as a judge ruled that legal permission will no longer be required to end care for patients in a “permanent vegetative state.”
What is most shocking about this development is that the advocates of medically-assisted suicide tend to argue for the inherent compassion of the act. It is an act of mercy to prevent suffering.
But this judgement entails that the death will be brought about by the slow process of starvation and thirst, so long as the relatives agree.
