Canada resists health-care reform, despite overwhelming evidence we need it
Health-care reform could resonate with Canadians if politicians got the messaging right. But they first need to disabuse the public of the fantasy that our system is first-rate
One of the more gratifying aspects of President Obama’s healthcare bill for the Canadian psyche were the obsequious references to Canada and its exemplary health care system. Was he not such a good President?
It appears that President Obama must have been listening to his advisor Valerie Jarrett a bit too closely, or perhaps the many Canadian who opine that their own health-care system is the best in the world. A July 14 report by the Commonwealth Fund confirmed that this belief, however widespread, deserved the equivalent of three out of four noses on the Pinocchio fact checker.
The private foundation’s annual ranking of the world’s 11 most developed nations has placed Canada’s health-care system third last—ahead only of France and the U.S.
Americans looking to reform their healthcare system might want to look elsewhere for guidance.
