Andrew Coyne: Michelle Carter case is the next step in the increasing normalization of suicide

Once the sanctity of human life as God has created it has been rejected by a society, as has been the case since abortion became legal, ethical responsibility has officially been diminished from being a judgement of right or wrong to a special situational decision for the autonomous self to identify, just as we are now seeing with human sexual identity.

No one else is fit to judge.

According to that postulate of autonomy, what appears to trouble the conscience of officialdom is now that there might be any impediment to killing.  To put it another way, the main concern is that the slope might not be slippery enough.

As Andrew Coyne puts it, they are troubled that ‘not only that those already determined to kill themselves might be prevented from having others help them, but that others might be prevented from convincing them to do it.
