William Deresiewicz discusses his new book and the ‘excellent sheep’ produced by institutions with an elite reputation.  The inflated and cultivate sense of self-esteem they get from a therapeutic education, lacking any sense of humility fostered by being granted access to beauty, truth, and goodness, leaves them both without direction or ability to direct themselves.

The call is not for tinkering at the margins, but for a renewed vision for the university and education in general.

The university’s mission is a spiritual one bequeathed by the medieval church.  The legacy of Christian education needs to be renewed from the foundations if the university is to survive.
