Why Traditional Sexual Morality No Longer Makes Sense

The church, as any theologian will tell you, isn’t an architectural designation so much as a reference to the assembled people of God.  The ekklesia, the ‘called out’ people, gather together.  In the context of that gathering, they develop communities that facilitate and encourage their community.

Marriage and sexual morality are key features because the relationship of Christ to His church is described as that of a bride to a bridegroom.  Capitalism succeeded because of the free movement of goods.  But technological developments and political freedoms also encouraged the movement of peoples.  The advantages of immigration are well known.  But there have also been costs.

The social mobility encouraged by capitalism has broken apart familial and social bonds, making rituals like the reading of the bans of marriage more or less a redundant practice because it is no longer the case that people live and get married where they grew up.

This interesting article suggests that the instability of our communities is as much a factor in the dissolution of traditional sexual morality as are the doctrinal challenges and redefinitions of institutions like marriage, etc. of our day.  In fact, the one has allowed the other to ‘make sense’.
